Council agenda for Feb. 25

Six new police officers will be sworn in at tonight's City Council meeting. Based on what Chief Matthews and other city officials said two weeks ago, the department is ahead of schedule.

Check out the complete agenda here.

UPDATE: Only four of the six police recruits were sworn in at Monday night's council meeting. Matthews said the other two individuals listed on the agenda, and possibly one more, likely will take the oath in March.

Ok the next question is the following. DLN reported some time back that the Chief was required by his contact to be certified by a specific date. Nothing has been noted in the paper as to the status/breach of contract. Can someone update what is going on?

In December, we reported Chief Matthews was suffering from an undisclosed injury and had been unable to take the physical exam portion of the certification test.

That's still where it stands. There is some leeway in his contract about how long he has to become certified. So it seems to be in a holding pattern, right now.

I would say the Chief is in a permanent hold pattern, he's not going to get certified. As some council members have said, he was hired to run the dept. not go out on the street to be a cop.

Permanent holding pattern? I don't get it. What is this injury? What is the timetable on recovery? Why is everything so secret here? I think for the residents of Coatesville who pay 2.5 of their wages to not know why is ridiculous. I don't get the whole cloak of secrecy thing here. I don't think we're asking to much. We hired this person to be the chief. Part of the offer/contract was that he was to be certified by a certain time. This was not done. Now he has 'injury' but no mention of what it is and what the prognosis is? Folks lets get real here. You want things to change or stay the same??? Seems to me that misery loves company in this town.
As for 3:27 last point of 'he was hired to run the department not be on the street to be a cop' is an asinine statement to make. You lead by example - period. If you want a politician to run your department why don't you make Walker the chief too. Hell he's already 2 hats going right now.

Yes council made that comment about the chief at a public meeting.

Anyway tonite they swore in 4 new officers, they all seem to be qualified as the "chief" read off things from their resume. 3 looked fine to me but I am a little concerned for the one young lady, she is only about 5 foot tall and weighs about 100 lbs! I hope they team her up with a big partner on her beat or else these young punks of Coatesville will knock her over. Time will tell, maybe she is tougher than she looks. Anyway congratulations to all.

I think more police is a great thing, I feel the slightest bit of relief that my tax dollars may actually be used for something. Its not much, but its a start, and I consider my families safety my #1 priority. Lets all be sure to make these new law enforcement officers feel welcome and appriciated.

I couldn't make it last night and I can't find anything about whether the Flats issue (McNeil/Power Plant) was discussed. Can someone who was there comment?

They didn't mention a thing about the flats, as if it never existed. It's amazing how things "blow over" from one council meeting to the next. There was a very light turn out except for the new cops and their families. I guess everything is on hold for now. Also west brandywine township lost their grant that they were going to use to buy that piece of city property on 340 so that is back to square one too.

I am thrilled to see that Coatesville has finally come out of the dark ages and hired female officers. Although I know they have had a female Sgt. for some time it is long overdue that other qualified female officers joined her.

Best wishes to ALL of the new officers. I hope they do not suffer any undue criticism because they were hired outside of the general civil service provisions. It is high time that the City has a police force that is representative of the community’s demographics.

Yes, Coatesville administration is full of uncertified folks.

That seems to be one of the "requirements" for getting hired !!
