Chief's reflections

Chief William Matthews talked about his first year as Coatesville's top cop in a story printed Sunday.

Among the revelations, the chief called his first year in the city a "whirlwind" and said Coatesville is his last stop before retirement.

Matthews continued not to give any more details about the medical condition that has prevented him from proceeding with getting state certification, but he said the condition has not caused him to miss any work. If the problem worsens, and he feels he cannot meet the responsibilities of his job, Matthews said he would willingly step down.

The following are some things Matthews said that did not make it into the newspaper.

About Lt. Julius Canale:
"(He has) demonstrated what true professionalism is all about ... When the gong has gotten tough he has been there ... Nothing accomplished this year would have been possible without the kind of professionalism and dedication he has exhimbited."
About the scheduled retirement of Detective Martin Quinn in June:
"I don't want him to go. These older, cooler heads who have been around know the city ... I have to figure out what makes him happy."
Matthews also announced the promotion of two officers lat week. Sgt. Rita Shesko has been promoted to acting lieutenant and Cpl. Jonathan Regan has been elevated to acting sergeant. Both will retain their "acting" status until they pass the promotion exam in the fall.

The Chief is a Joke. If you read between the lines, he is not, will not pass his certification. and will be hitting the pike soon. and Canale will be the new chief, as should have been done in the first place. looks like we wasted a year or more on this matter too.

Not knowing too much about this other than recently published articals, what are the previously mentioned Mr. Canale's credentials and differances that would make the police force better or worse?

Thank you for any FACTUAL information you can provide.

I agree with poster No 1 he is a joke. Canale should have been the police chief he is CERTIFIED and has 18years plus experience with coatesville. . As far as Lt. Gordon goes I hope he has a great lawsuit building up against Mr. Matthews. He still is not back to work. Good for him. i hope he has had a nice vacation. Just like Matthews said all along just like he quoted he will leave or retire from coatesville that was all planned is that so hard to see. Wake up people. His time is limited.

Why didn't Matthews mentioned that crime in Coatesville has risen since he took over? So what is his remedy, hire a temporary and inexperienced police force. But that's okay, their not white.

One can only see from this that the city is moving forward. Only those who want to tear coatesville down will criticize the chief and his actions.

I think Mr Matthews should concentrate on getting Coatesville's streets cleaned up of crime and get certified as per his contract instead of writting a weekly column in the paper.

oh yea its movin forward and can you please explain what you mean by that? We wouldn't be criticizing the chief if he would do his job and become CERTIFIED like his contract states. We all knew that wasn't going to happen. God bless our coatesville police officers. Hope a new chief will be in soon.

I heard Mr Matthews reason for not getting certified is that he hurt his back while moving to Coatesville to become Police Chief.

Well, the new police officers are really getting a "taste" of what Coatesville is like. I got a chance to hear some of the stories from one of them. It's amazing some of the things that go on in town that never make it to the newspaper!
