Finance work session ... the aftermath
At the Oct. 5 finance work session, City Council President Martin Eggleston urged administrators to look into salary reductions in every department.
“The city can make cuts in any department regardless if it’s union or not – just not the fire department,” City Manager Harry Walker responded.
Walker said he plans to recommend about $350,000 in expenditure cuts. He said he was looking into cuts in the recreation and codes departments. More details about potential staff reductions are expected at next week's City Council meeting.
Do you think the city should consider salary and staff reductions to help balance the budget?

I think that staff salary cuts are one of the few things that will work for us!
Getting more people involved will also help.
Look at it this way, if two people volunteer an hour a week to help, imagine how this would free up time for those who actually have more imortant things to do!
Elections are a month away. Let's change the council. Let's get responsible people in office. Let's work to get this mess cleaned up.
I don't know how much longer I can pay some of the highest real estate taxes in the county, and the highest income tax in the county. Check Zillow.com, Coatesville houses have lost more than 25% of value over just the past year. If we want to move, we almost have to cut our losses and start all over again in a better place. Believe me I'm checking out the local governments as I continue to look for a new home.
The elections are so important!
We can not let this go on anymore. We NEED to make sure the Karl gets elected in his ward and if Ingrid in the fourth.
We need change and need it now!!
Karl Marking seems pushy, I'm worried if he doesn't get his way all the time he would be disruptive to the rest of the new city council. We need to be very careful on who we elect or we could have a repeat of 4 years ago. Word on the street is, Jarrell Brazzle is going to run a write in campaign against Ingrid Jones in the second ward and run at large. If he wins both then they want to appoint Patsy Ray again. You can bet Ernie Campos, Andrew Lehr and Harry Walker are behind this scheme. We cannot let Brazzle get elected!!!!!!
Ernie Campos is still throwing his two cents in? Geeze, I thought that family was GONE by now. Wife working at Keystone, has a long history of std's transmitted to her by Ernie, and daughters have turned to underage drinking and drugs, which mom and dad not only cover up, but condone by buying the booze. When Mom and Dad werent around, the youngest threw her body around at Mom's exboyfriend to get him to buy her booze, with the promise of sleeping with him.
ANYTHING that Ernie touches turns to UGLY, and emds up with the same morals he has.
Yeah I hear the same thing about Campos. Essentially that he is helping Walker and Lehr with the Coatesville Unity Committee (the group that supported Ray, Schenk, and now Brazzle). As for Marking I don't think he's pushy at all. Quite the opposite. I think he is saying what we all have been thinking about for years. If it were multiple candidates saying the same thing then I don't think anyone would be talking about being pushy. However I've read his website and I agree with it. Is he vocal..yes? But guys if we don't get some people into Council who start pushing to make things better it will get worse. So anyway I live in the 4th so I'm voting for him. As for the rest of the group I wish I could find more information about their campaign.
Mr. Marking pushy? How about intelligent and educated. Talk about change, and here it is for once. I wish we quite a few more of him. Or are you actaully afraid of change?
It is a absolute CRIME that we DO NOT have a animal control officer to deal with the issues of the city, yet we have a "city spokesperson". What are they speaking about? The holes in the ground uptown that are supposed to be buildings? You literally cannot walk to church like we did back in the day for fear of wild animals. And y'all sit up on council and ack like everything is all right. What is right about that????? Do you have kids? What if they get bit by a UNlicensed pit bull/some other large dog or a rabid animal? What if it was your mother/child/family member???? You'd be over at the Daily local boo hooing so fast.
And Miss Laurie, although I do appreciate your idea of volunteer services, I work and I pay taxes. At my job, I am expected to do my job. If I were a ENTRY level public relations person, I would know basic html code to change a website, check Monster, it's a requirement for most PR and communications jobs. That said, why do we still have channel 66 and rerun after rerun? We had more information when Art Douglas did the school closings and phone forum.
More money? Other municipalities FINE folks with loud music blasting don't they? The reality of it is that some working people work nights (you know the folks that pay the taxes) and sleep during the day. Day OR night, the incessant boom boom of cars blasting what is supposed to be music CAN BE additional revenue.
Please stop pandering to the non taxpaying citizens and decide to do something for the working/taxpaying folk. I can't benefit from a free clinic and apartments, group home, or section 8 rental. I and I am sure many others are tired of the only progress that lacks anything other than the "smack" of lower income. And planners of such things, although I do appreciate your public interest work, put some of it in your own backyard; as in spread it out THROUGHOUT Chester County.
Get the codes people out of the office and let 'em walk the beat, street by street and look at what we citizens look at every day, and actually take your little book out and fine whomever for WHATEVER. Condensending little remarks from inside your little offices are a bit tired at this point.
Please vote for what is right for the WHOLE Community this election.
I an't going nowhere. I'm too close to retirement.
To the last poster...
I agree with what you have said.
What I meant by volunteering is make the section 8 and welfare recipients volunteer for a designated amount of time per month, or cut their benefits.
Not having any money should not make you unable to do anything.
Clean up the park (and take your kids since I know there will be cries of "I HAVE KIDS").
For those that do work, it's different. But I am really peeved at all the "freeloaders" we have in this city and how they are dragging us down so hard.
PS, we need to get Welfare and Section 8 to begin drug testing ALL people receiving benefits.
Laurie - those are great ideas but both Section 8 and welfare are federal programs so getting them to change isn't something that simple. If you want the City to do better you need to enforce what is already on the books, and find a way to remove the City Manager with someone with a proven track record and vision to stop talking about revitalization but actually take action.
i say, i would not want my salary cut. maybe not give projected raises, i just can't advocate doing something to someone that i wouldn't want done to me....people have bills, and a life style that they are used of living on...
maybe don't fill open positions, but don't touch recreation, there is already very little recreation offered to coatesville youth.
maybe create a tax credit for volunteers.... ie. volunteer 4 hours a week @ $15 per hour credit or $60 per week x 52 wks and give your credit to your cpa for a tax deduction, as you would donating clothes etc. to non profits
laurie, i'm all for having you drug tested....for positive change lol
now you want all the section 8 and welfare recipients and their kids to be forced to volunteer ...you are tired of free loaders, you think that council making salary cuts are one the few things that will work for us....so callous , so short sighted, so insensitive to others plight.
instead of being sick of free loaders, why not give god the glory, and be thankful that by his grace ( yeah , yeah and work on your part)you are not in need of assistance....
stay out the way of karma
