Authorities charge Coatesville bookkeeper with accepting bribe

Authorities charged a Coatesville bookkeeper with one count of bribery after she reportedly fixed a city resident’s outstanding trash bills.

Authorities charged Maria Kauffman, 43, of Atglen, on Friday. Between October and November 2008 Kauffman reportedly agreed to accept $1,500 from a city resident to zero out the $8,500 the resident owed for outstanding trash bills, according to authorities.

As a resident of the city, how does it make you feel to know that a bookkeeper was allegedly involved in a bribe?

Funny thing is I have had to deal with her in the past. I never trusted that woman. Something deep inside me said that. I always listen to that voice. Damned if it wasn't right. Hope she bought a nice dress with that money so she looks good in court. Guilty!

I also want to know who was the resident?? Should they not be guilty of something too? Don't get me wrong, Maria should be going to jail...

I suspect that this is only the tip of the iceberg, but exposing her to the light of day is the beginning of the solution. And yes anonymous, this resident, if so proven would be guilty of bribing a public official and should be made to make an account.

It amazes me that anyone would be so stupid as to think they could get away with this. She always did have an attitude of being better and smarter than anyone else. Just goes to show you that if you fall into the depths of corruption, no matter how "smart" you think you are....you will get caught. And to think the taxpayers were paying her salary and she found it necessary to steal from them. Sad, very sad!
