Walgreens coming to town ...
Members of city administration recently told City Council that Walgreens still desires to open a store at the corner of East Lincoln Highway and South Eighth Avenue. This project was originally pitched to council in the summer of 2008.
The local developer said the projected open date of the new store is July or August 2011. He said Walgreens is "fully committed" to the project.
Asked why Walgreens wants to open a store in the city, a spokesman for the company said, "We look for the best corners in America that we can offer pharmacy and retail services."

Will it be a nice addition? Compared to what is there currently. Ahhhh yeah. A dollar store/liquor store/pizzeria or a Walgreens. I'll take the Walgreens. Hopefully slowly block by block this will have an effect. Is it a coincidence that the new Council fired the City Manager and removed the City Atty and now Walgreens is interested? I don't think so. Actually I'm waiting to see who else is now interested now that the changes have been made.
I am so glad they are saying "yes" to Coatesville. That is one of the 1st corners you see as you enter town.
Definitely a nice addition. There's a really crappy bunch of stores there now. And to think my elementary school was on that very spot!
Great news and thank you Walgreens for coming into town. A few more good names like this and who knows , maybe this place really will turn around.
From what I understand, they will be building IN ADDITION to those stores. I might be wrong, but I remember hearing that the stores there now do not have a problem with Walgreens building- which they might if they had to lose THEIR business.
Walgreens should be a good addition to the selection of stores, assiming they won't sell crack pipes (the glass ones AND tire guages), blunts, and other drug paraphernalia. If Coatesville made a ban on selling these items, as well as "postage scales" and baggies, I would bet our city would begin to rise from the ashes again.
Stop allowing our town to supply all the needs of an enterprising youth population who wants to make a lot of money in a small amount of time!
I agree with the last comment. And it's not just the youth, it's the old heads that "use" also. A ban on those items would be wonderful.
According to the plans approved by the city over 2 years ago and by the zoning hearing board at the same time, the current buldings will be razed and the Walgreens will take up the entire lot.
Will all of Coatesville residents be able to shop here??????? The Rite Aid in town is horrible and scary to get out of your car.
There is no where else to post this...Why is Coatesville not using the time to clean up the streets from SNOW????? The back residential streets are a MESS.
It would actually be nice to have a dry town. Free of drugs and alcohol. Let all that money go someplace else, and let our city be known as the one who "took back" our city.
The attitude of residents in Coatesville keep it a place where no person wants to shop. Each resident should take care how the speak and how they shop when in this city. It is not any different than any other city - it shows only when up good when people care and bad when some person does something wrong. Right now the city has too many people doing too many wrongs and not enough rights. Walgreens is trying to help Coatesville - join them!
Although a Walgreens would be great it will not stop the drugs & violence in Coatesville. It is the people not the stores!!!! In fact, I wouldn't want to work or shop in any store in Coatesville. It is a shame because as a child I was always excited to shop in town. Very sad!!!!
Coatesville can be a good town again when stores open up again. I remember when Coastesville was the spot back in the days. There is to much bad elements that take away from Coatesville growing into a good town. People need to work together instead of against each other.
I think it's a great idea! It would provide convenience and employment for Coatesville's unemployed
This is remarkable! I would hate to be the manager of this Walgreens! First, ask why the previous retail pharmacy closed! Then you'll have an answer to the fate of the proposed new store. I guess that someone at Walgreens plans to take out an insurance policy to hedge against the eventual failure of this establishment. I'm sure many reading this will say this is so negative. True, it is. However, I know the ways of the people and I know no one is stepping up to change to crime issue, jobless issue, schooling (lack of) issue, and the "big picture" perceptionof the "City". Someone has or plans to talk to the folks in Pheonixville to see how it is done.
The previous pharmacy closed as the others Pitcherella's, The one across from the Turkey Hill (remember when there was a boat dealership there), the one in town near IVB bank, due to the large chains and prices.
Quality education can be achieved if you are willing to learn and not have the teachers babysit. Parents need to raise their own. It was the same story when I was in school in the 60's, only now the folks that didn't want to learn then are now walking the streets doing nothing productive (and I won't even bother to give shout outs and mention names). Couple of convictions and they are now unemployable in this job market.
Get up in the morning go to Turkey Hill and see all the folks going to work! See the young folks that do work and will hold the door open for you. They are never in the news, it's not the whole town, it's the bad element that is visible on a daily basis.
Stop feeling sorry for them and giving them handouts and let them go to work like some of us do each and every day.
Thanks Coatesville police force for doing a job that I know I couldn't handle. I see improvement from the last administration. It won't happen overnight.
