More than 40 vacancies on city's authorities, boards, commissions and committees

City Council Vice President Karl Marking learned that there were more than 40 vacant seats on the city’s various authorities, boards, commissions and committees.

Marking said he spent about 120 hours reviewing meeting minutes back to 2004 with the help of Ruthann Mowday, an administrative assistant for the city. Ultimately, Marking said the vacancies were a result of bad record keeping.

The goal now is to get dedicated residents involved in these authorities, boards, commissions and committees.

“There is a huge apathy problem in the city and part of that is because people feel the elected officials aren’t fulfilling their duties,” Marking said. “It’s easy to turn people away from positions in government when they feel the government is broken.”

What do you think about the vacancies?

This gives me mixed feelings. I am angry that for so long hese things have slipped by the wayside, yet elated that someone is finally paying attention to details.

All one needed to do was call any department in City Hall and try to get through to a person. They advertised free fill dirt on 82 for ages, leaving a number. When one called, they had to keave a message and the calls were not returned.

The citizens and council can turn this city around. It will just take a bit of time.

well if the city knew there were empty seats waiting for them to be filled... maby there would've been more involvement by the citizens themselves!! People have been kept in the dark- and this is what happens. Things did not have to get this bad... and I'm glad for the digging up of old dirt and incompetence so that the people's eyes can be opened once again and KNOW where they can make a difference and follow thru with the opportunity waiting!!!!! Keep up the transparency council... it will be the anchor you need to get this place moving again!!! And for those who sit on their lazy butts waiting for handouts... this is your opportunity to redeem yourself as a productive member of society... here is a chance to prove that you DO have 2 stones to rub together in your heads- and get involved for the good of the people!! Get up off the couch and make a difference!!!! Get in touch with council and see if there is an open seat where your voice belongs--

Hey Anonymous, are you on any boards, commissions or committees? I take offense to you implying that everyone, on these committees, is lazy and not doing anything. I am on the Parks and Recreation commission, and I must say, that I work full-time have three children and a husband, volunteer in the community and at my children's school, and the only thing I've gotten from these meetings were that my time was wasted. That is time in my day that I will never be able to get back. The "Chairs" of these committee don't even have a clue as to how to run a meeting or take the recommendations back to council to make them a reality. Until you've experienced that you should hold off on throwing stones from your glass house.

7:10 - well said - everyone needs to stop telling everyone else what to do and simply do it. Seems to the number one thing in Coatesville - blame the other guy and take no accountability. As for the meetings I'm not surprised. I would gather that many people on these boards don't work in corporate America and do have a clue on how to run a meeting.

the lazy butts I'm talking about are the citizens who wait for everyone else to do their job raising their children and making their money. These are the people that drag society down- and make laziness look attractive. These are the people who now have to look at all of the opportunities (40 to be exact) and show the world they are worth more than a welfare check. People who sit and complain have an opportunity to volunteer and make a difference... they should. If you are volunteering your time- then there is nothing to be offended at... it's the one's who sit yet demand more that get my goat....

But again what are you doing? Stop making blanket statements. Do you know how hard it is for a single parent to try and work sometimes 2 jobs and raise productive members of society? I'm sure you came from a perfect Leave it to Beaver family. How about trying to help and stop pointing you finger, because if you look down there are three fingers pointing at you!

seriously? I know all about single parenting.. and the one thing I made a promise to myself was I would not let my "singleness" stand in the way of offering my child the same thing other kids with 2 parents had... you do what you can when it works for you- and at the end of the day your child has an informed and caring parent. The one's who choose to sit and let others handle their business without an honest effort SHOULD feel ashamed!!! If you are one of those people who collect a check and scream that the system isn't good enough for you- then here's your chance to be heard!!!!! Pick an opening and fill it!!! Make a difference for your own children as well as the community as a whole- and stop playing the victim role!!!!! The three fingers pointing back at myself remind me of the years I invested and the sacrifices I made for my child of one parent... I have no regrets! NONE!

you only have regrets when you don't get involved.. I've never met a parent who regrets GETTING involved!! Prioritize your life and BE THERE FOR YOUR CHILDREN.. THEY CAN BE PRODUCTIVE MEMBERS OF SOCIETY IF YOU ARE!!!!!
