School taxes on the rise

The Coatesville Area School Board tentatively approved the 2010-11 budget with a 3.6 percent tax hike in a split vote on Tuesday night.

The general fund budget was approved at $146.4 million which is a about a $7 million, or 5 percent, increase over last year’s school budget.

The 3.6 percent tax hike would raise the tax rate to 28.49 mills, with one mill equal to $1 in tax for every $1,000 in assessed property value. An average taxpayer with a home in the district assessed for tax purposes at $117,347 would therefore generate a school tax bill of $3,343 — an increase of $116 over the prior year.

What is your reaction to the school tax increase?

Yea. I think I am going to do myself a favor and get on welfare like the rest of the deadbeats in Coatesville. Owning a home makes the school district, city, american water and peco want to steal and rip me off! I will get cheaper housing, cappted electricity, cheaper water and rent a home without taxes. I can not take this camden coatesville crap anymore! Everyone do yourself a favor and get the hell out! Maybe Coatesville will learn a lesson once there is no one left to pay ANYTHING and them NOTHING!!! It is time to stick together now! ITS NOW OR NEVER!!!

You can't spend money like "drunken sailors" and not expect to eventually take it out on the homeownwers in Coatesville.
At least we have beautiful sports fields to educate our kids. You will see a for sale sign in front of my home soon.

Dear Anonymous,
What are you saying? Sell your home then, someone will buy it and it will be they'er problem to pay the tax bill and you can rent from them. And as far as the school taxes goes, our grandparents did'nt cry half as much as you when they raised there taxes to pay for the schools when you went to school. If you hate C-ville that much "Leave and good riddens to you." Because there are folks who beleive that the "Ville" will be back to the glory days of old.

I agree we should ALL move out of C-Ville. I am tired of working for the non-working Coatesville residents and I have had it!!!!!!!
If the PUC raises the rate and the school tax, we will also GET OUT.
Let Coatesville be a hole in the ground and that is where they are headed when they consistently raise rates on those of us that work hard. IT IS OVER C-VILLE We are getting OUT TOO

WE are all spreading the word to GET OUT. We are done paying for those that lay around all day and feed off us hard working individuals.
Good-bye C-ville

The school district is horriffic, there's no way I would send my child there anyway. Even East Fallowfield Elem where he would go is rated terribly. Our realtor has already been over and our house is being listed next week. What a mistake we made moving to Coatesville.

The district schools have improved steadily over the last several years due to the improvesments and investments made in curiculum. Keep in mind that over the last several years, the district also decresed taxes twice and held to no increase a third time. What short memories everyone has.

Also, where has Danielle Lynch been throughout the school year. This is the first article on a board meeting I've seen in more than six months. Nothing reported on the positives going on, like in other districts, just show up to stir the pot come budget season.

The combined increases in school taxes, PECO, and now the water situation is more than enough for "working" people living in the city of Coatesville.

Please fill out the PUC complaint form. Copy and distribute them to the seniors that do not know the forms are available.

And if I feel the need to donate to the unfortunate among us, it will not be the ones in this area. I am tired of low income housing, and every other break that comes along for everyone except working folks and seniors. WIth no cost of living increase for both seniors and the average working person, this is absolutely wrong.

Enough is enough. I am tired of our police force having to deal with the almost daily influx of new poor (with issues) that we are somehow expected to help all the time. It's time for the folks employed in the poverty assistance jobs to take it somewhere else. Yes it seems as indeed no one will be left to take care of them.

After reading the posts, I looked at the district's website for their budget presentation. Everyone hates tax increases especially during a bad economy. But, does anyone realize this is the first time the tax rate has climbed above what it was in 2005? It's been more than 5 years since we were at those rates. I think the district has been doing as best as they can, while still trying to make the schools better. I don't want to pay more, but at least I can see my money is making a positive difference for a change.

I hate an increase in taxes just as much as everyone else. But instead of so much money devoted to athletics, how about they bring back classes in civics like they had in this district when my parents were in school. Goodness knows we need that more now days then another overpaid coach or new athletic field.

I noticed the new lacrosse field is beautiful. We graduated with just plain old grass and the powdered stripes. Is there really a need for the fence and all that nonsense. It is things like this that run the costs up. And yet they want my kid to go door to door and sell stuff or sell to my relatives. How about this, my relatives and I already pay taxes.

They took down a few schools (yup, bulldozed them to the ground) Craig Ridgeway, the one next to Sante's. Big strong solid buildings, and now they need to build new ones. This has to stop.

There needs to be a pay to play type of fee instituted. If you decide to have five kids and not work, then perhaps you could at least pick up trash on the grounds or paint or do some type of community work. I'm truly sick of it.

Wow, that a huge tax increase, at the same time all other bills are mandated to go up, like water, and power. Thanks CASD. Governments continue to tax and tax and tax, while incomes are stagnant for those who work for a living. If your on the dole, your income rises like governments, but the people who pay taxes see no increases, but are taxed more and more. I guess the CASD knows who the voters are that elect them, the ones on the dole, who don't work for a living, just lay around and collect welfare, public assistance, food stamps, section 8 housing vouchers, free government healthcare, on and on and on. Well I am moving my family out of this district, I will lose money on my home, can't sell it for what I paid for it, but, the rest of you will be stuck paying for these bums. Coatesville WAKE UP!!!! By taxing the life out of the taxpayer, you are creating the slum that surrounds you!

Well, You are an old and uneducated cockroach...I am paying your bills through my taxes while you collect welfare!

I'm offended.

I'm not on welfare, I'm a home owner, that makes me a tax payer. I have lived, work in Coatesville and the surrounding areas for the last 30 old years, so I seen when Newberry's, Devitts, JC Pennys and Sears where downtown and moved away. I have seen the crack epidemic hit our town and subsided (thanks to policing and public education).

I'm not so uneducated as you think, I'm a C-ville graduate, and hold a degree or two from some of Pennsylvania's highly rated universities. I'm a optimist. Sure I could of taken my college education and moved to let's say West Chester and made my life there but I'm from "COATESVILLE" the Steel City, where we build great athletes such as S.Brazzle, D.Morgan, R.Hamilton, the Joe Brothers, W.Downing, and countless others.

I'm sorry I don't listen or watch those talking heads on radio and television (sorry I'd lied) but I when I do I take it for what it is "Entertainment". Thats what they are getting paid for, not to educate you but to keep you listening or watching. Here's a little advise from a "Educated" person and no doubt you heard this before. DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU SEE AND HEAR ON T.V., RADIO AND THE INTERNET! You are what they call in the media trade as sheep. Or do you want me to put in your terms, Cccooaatesvilllle is baaaaad, so leeeaaave.

I too am fed up with the misuse of our tax money, but it was not the people in there now who did this to us but those back who imbeseled our taxes and than left us to deal withit after thieir departure.I feel that those who are in power now who we voted for are going about it the best way they can.Hang in there and the Ville will again be a nice place to live....
